Blueland Laundry Detergent Review: Are the products worth it?

A few months ago, I purchased Blueland’s laundry detergent products to try a more eco-friendly option than the laundry pods I was using.

I’ve heard lots about this brand and wanted to decide for myself whether it’s worth the hype. I’m all for an eco-friendly swap, but the product has to work!

Now that I’ve had a few months to try it out, I’m sharing my unfiltered opinions and thoughts! I’ll answer all your questions including how to use Blueland laundry detergent, whether the products work well, if it’s worth the cost, and more.

What I Bought

I decided to buy the Laundry Essentials Kit, which comes with:

40 laundry detergent tablets & tin
500g Oxi Booster Powder & tin
3 Wool Dryer Balls

You can purchase each of these products individually, but I decided to go for this starter kit to try out their entire range of laundry products.

Ease of Use: 5/5

First of all, how easy was it to use the products? I found the Blueland laundry products very easy to use! It’s really no different from other laundry products I’ve used.

Laundry tablets: If you’ve ever used a Tide pod or other detergent pod, these laundry tablets work in the same way. You simply throw the tablet into the laundry drum, add your clothes, and press start! I much prefer tablets over liquid detergent, it’s way less messy!
Oxi booster powder: The oxi booster powder is also super easy to use! The tin it comes with has a measured scoop in the lid, so you fill that up and throw it in the washer.
Dryer balls: Lastly, dryer balls get thrown into the dryer with clothes just like you would with dryer sheets. But, since they’re reusable, I leave them in the dryer after each cycle!

Product Effectiveness: 4.5/5

I’ve used these Blueland laundry products on everything including sheets, towels, sweaty running clothes, and work clothes! When it comes to product effectiveness, I have to say I’m pretty impressed.

Laundry tablets: The laundry tablets work very effectively. They’re super tiny, so I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about how well they would clean an entire load of laundry. But, I was pleasantly surprised! There has maybe been 1 or 2 instances where the tablet hasn’t dissolved completely, but honestly that was probably my fault for over-stuffing the load. The smell and stain removing power of these little tablets are impressive!
Oxi booster: Adding a scoop of the oxi booster definitely adds a nice scent to the load of laundry! However, I will say that I usually lean towards unscented products. This oxi booster product is “clean linen” scented. I don’t feel like I need it on my everyday clothes, so I found myself only throwing a scoop in with extra smelly clothes like my workout clothing!
Dryer balls: Honestly, I rarely used dryer sheets before, so I wasn’t sure if I would notice a difference with using a dryer ball in my laundry routine. But I’ve really noticed a difference in speed of the laundry cycle with these wool dryer balls – especially when drying bulkier items like my sheets!

Eco-Conscious Benefits: 4.5/5

Of course, one of the main selling points of Blueland’s products is they are eco-friendly. A few of the eco-friendly features of products in the Laundry Essentials Kit that I love include:

The laundry tablets wrappers and pouches are compostable, and the shipping materials are recyclable!
No chlorine bleach, no parabens, no phthalates, no ammonia, and no plastic packaging in the products.
The reusable wool dryer balls are meant to replace 1,000 disposable dryer sheets!

I’m certainly no sustainability expert, but I’m always looking for opportunities to swap out more eco-friendly products for things I use regularly, and this checks a lot of boxes for me!

Cost: 3/5

My review has been largely positive up to this point, but in my opinion the cost is a major downside of the products.

It’s important to note that I live in Canada, which means that paying USD and international shipping really impact the cost of these products. The Laundry Essentials kit is $44 USD, which translates to $56 CAD. Plus, shipping cost an extra $8.99 USD ($11.50 CAD).

But, since I purchased the starter set, I will only need detergent re-fills in the future (I don’t have to re-purchase dryer balls, tins, etc). So the recurring costs would be significantly lower.

While the costs can be hefty, there are a few ways to reduce costs:

Discounts for bulk & bundles: I do like that Blueland offers bundled deals and discounts for buying in bulk. For example, you can save 15% by buying the laundry kit rather than each item individually. When purchasing refills for the laundry tablets, you can also save 10% if you buy 2 (instead of 1), and 20% if you buy 3!
Promotions & sales: I’ve also seen quite a few deals on Blueland around the holidays! I purchased my set on a Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal, which offered 20% off my order. If you’re interested in trying these products but intimidated by the costs, wait for a sale to save a bit of money.
Split the shipping: If you know someone else who also buys Blueland (or wants to try), combine your orders and split the shipping! I do this often with my family that lives nearby. Shipping costs are an annoying expense, especially if you’re making a relatively small order. I also saw that Indigo started carrying Blueland products! While they don’t carry laundry products yet, if they do start selling them that would be a way to skip the shipping costs for my fellow Canadians.

Overall: 4/5

Overall, there’s a lot that I love about Blueland’s laundry products. They work really effectively, are easy to use, and are a more eco-friendly option compared to many other products. BUT, the cost is a huge factor and can’t be ignored.

So what’s the final verdict? I really liked these products, and will be re-purchasing. I will definitely take advantage of sales and bulk buying to make it a bit cost-effective for my household.

If you have some extra money to spare and want to put that towards an eco-friendly product, then this is a great option for you. However, it may not be worth it to everyone!
