How to Organize a Dresser in 6 Easy Steps
Learn how to organize a dresser with these helpful tips & tricks!
Is your dresser so full that you can barely open it? Or is it so messy that you have no idea what clothes are in each drawer?
Dresser organization doesn’t have to be complicated, and can make a huge difference. In this blog post, I’ll walk you through simple steps to transform your dresser – including products to help you stay organized, and the best folding method.
This post is all about how to organize a dresser!
How to Organize A Dresser
Step 1: Declutter Your Drawers
The first (and most important) step of dresser organization is to declutter the contents of your drawers. If you have overflowing drawers, no amount of neat folding or organization bins will save you!
I always like to do my decluttering by removing everything from the drawers, so you can start fresh! Often, you’ll be surprised by items you didn’t even realize were hidden at the back of your drawers.
Go through all your drawers and donate/get rid of items that:
- You never wear (ask yourself- have you worn it in the last year?)
- Have holes/damage (repair these if you can!)
- Are out-of-season (store these under your bed)
- Don’t fit properly
Step 2: Group Similar Items Together
Next, take a look at the items you’re keeping and put them into categories. It can be tricky to see what the item is once you’ve folded it into drawers (is it a t-shirt or long sleeve?), so I always like to group similar items together.
Depending how many drawers you have, you could dedicate one drawer to each item – ex. one drawer for jeans, one drawer for sweaters.
My dresser doesn’t have many drawers, so I have a system where I keep tank tops on the left, t-shirts in the middle, and long sleeves on the right! This way, I always know where each item is. Create a system that makes sense to you!
Step 3: Select Organization Products
Now for the fun part – choosing organization products! This step isn’t absolutely necessary, but I personally have found that a few basic products can really help with organizing drawers (and keeping them organized).
Below I break down a few different dresser drawer organizer options and why you’ll love them. Remember, always take measurements of your space before purchasing any storage solutions to make sure they will fit! Choose the product that meets your needs and space.
This 8-piece set has a storage cube for every item you’ll have in your dresser! There’s different sizes for socks, bras, t-shirts and more. If you have a ton of dresser space, they also have a 13-piece set available.
Does your dresser have super wide or deep drawers? These adjustable dividers are perfect for creating sections within your drawers. There’s a long and short option, so make sure to get the correct measurements for your drawers.
Step 4: Use the Vertical Fold Method
Now that you have your organization products, it’s time to put away your items.
I recently discovered the vertical fold method, and I cannot emphasize enough how big of a difference this made with my dresser organization! If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out the video below for an easy tutorial:
I love this method of folding because it is hugely space-saving, and also allows you to see all the items you have in your drawer. Look at the difference between my old method on the left (rolling clothes) and new method on the right (vertical folds):
Step 5: Clear Off Dresser
Most of this post has been focused on dresser drawer organization, but let’s not forget about the top of dresser! Surfaces like dressers are an easy place for clutter to gather, which doesn’t look great.
As much as possible, keep clutter off your dresser! It will make your room look so much tidier.
If you do have a few items on display, make sure it’s done in an intentional way. For example, a decorative jewelry organizer will look nicer than a bunch of earrings and necklaces randomly scattered.
Step 6: Maintenance!
Now that you’ve put so much effort into organizing your dresser, don’t let it go to waste!
Maintenance doesn’t have to be a ton of work – simple things like rotating clothes each season and decluttering when you rotate clothes can make a huge difference.
