These small bedroom organization hacks can help you maximize space, reduce clutter, and keep your bedroom perfectly organized.

This post is all about organization tips for small bedrooms!

Best Organization Tips For Small Bedrooms

1. Create a Regular Decluttering Routine

The most important (and first) step of any organization refresh is to declutter! It’s nearly impossible to keep a room organized if it’s packed with stuff. This is especially important if you have a small bedroom, every inch of space that an item takes up counts!

But also, decluttering once will not help keep your bedroom organized long-term. Create a regular decluttering routine. For example, at the end of every season I through all my clothes and donate clothes I didn’t wear at all. This means my closet gets decluttered 4x per year, so it never gets overflowed!

2. Fold clothes efficiently

Do you see the difference between the photo on the left and the photo on the right? This is my drawer of athletic clothing. The only difference between the left & right photo is how I folded the clothes. I used Marie Kondo’s folding method to make my drawers so much more organized! It’s SUPER easy to do, below is a link to her YouTube tutorial:

3. Keep Surfaces Clear

As much as possible, try to reduce “visual clutter”. There is nothing that will make a room look more cluttered and disorganized than a bunch of knick knacks all over your night stand or dresser.

Your drawers and closet could be perfectly organized, but if surfaces around your room are full of stuff then it’s going to look messy. Surfaces easily collect “stuff” because it’s easier to set something down than to put it back in its place.

Of course, it’s unrealistic to have nothing on your surfaces. But, do a walk through of your room and do a scan of everything that’s on a surface, and whether it actually needs to be there. Do you really need 4 books on your nightstand? Or can you just keep the one you’re reading out, and put the others away until you’re ready to use them?

4. Use Under-Bed Storage

Buy Under Bed Storage

Utilizing storage in out-of-sight areas is a great way to keep your bedroom organized. This reduces visual clutter, as I mentioned above. If you don’t have a ton of closet space, under-bed storage is a great option! These storage bag allow you to tuck away out-of-season clothes that you don’t need in your closet. Under-bed storage allows you to have your stuff easily accessible, but still organized. It’s definitely one of the best bedroom organization hacks!

5. Use Furniture Risers

Buy Furniture Risers

If you don’t already have a tall bed frame, one of the easiest ways to create under-bed storage is with furniture risers. They are pretty inexpensive, and allow you to gain either 5 or 8 inches of height under your bed!

6. Create Organization Systems in Each Zone

how to organize a small bedroom on a budget

Every space needs a different organization system, so tackle one “zone” of your bedroom organization at a time. For example, your closet, night stands, dresser, and desk areas are all unique spaces that need different organization solutions.

I have a few other posts that target specific areas of your bedroom that can help including my post on closet organization, jewelry organization, and office organization (if you have a desk in your bedroom).

7. Use Vertical Space

Buy Ladder Shelf

Buy Floating Shelves

Most typical bedroom furniture like nightstands, dressers, beds, and chairs take up a lot of low, horizontal floor space.

To maximize space and get your small bedroom organized, take advantage of the vertical space available to you! Items like floating shelves and bookshelves offer space for storage, and take up vertical wall space that otherwise would go unused.

8. Re-Arrange Your Bedroom To Maximize Space

I love this tip because it’s completely free! If you’ve lived in your apartment for a while, you’re probably used to the way your furniture is laid out. But is your layout maximizing the small space you have available?

Try re-arranging your furniture to make sure you’ve used your floor space and all furniture to your advantage! Small changes like switching your bedroom and desk can make your floor space feel so much larger. Consider things like walkability, frequency of use for furniture, access to storage, etc.

9. Keep Laundry Organized

Buy Laundry Hamper

Prevent a pile up of dirty clothes on the floor with a simple yet effective laundry hamper. I love this divided laundry basket, it even has detachable liner bags! An effective laundry system is definitely a must-have to keep your bedroom organized.

10. Use Over-Door Organizers

Buy Over-Door Shoe Organizer

Buy Over-Door Hanger

To keep a small bedroom organized, you have to use all space available to your advantage. And that includes the backs of doors! I love over-door hangers and organizers. The over-door shoe organizer is a great alternative to shoe racks on the floor if you have limited space. Plus, over-door hanger allows you to keep items like purses, sweaters, or hats easily accessible yet still organized.

11. Use Furniture That Doubles as Storage

Buy Storage Bench

One of the best organizational tips for small bedrooms is having furniture that can double as storage. It allows you to neatly tuck away items out of sight and reduce visible clutter.

There’s tons of places you can take advantage of built in storage – I liked a storage bench with tons of open room inside, but you could also consider options like a bed frame with built-in shelves/drawers, or a night stand with deep drawers.
