9 Clever Ways to Organize Your Closet
Looking for ways to organize your closet? Here are simple, yet clever ways to tackle closet organization.
Closet organization was one of the last things I tackled in my home, because it’s not obvious when you look at my apartment compared to the living room or entry way. It’s an area that you can just stuff things behind closed doors and forget about.
BUT, now that my closet is organized, I can tell you it makes the biggest difference! You go into your closet every day to get dressed. So if it’s chaotic, you’ll never be able to find what you’re looking for.
There’s so many different ways to organize your closet and it will depend on the type of space you have. Some closets have tons of hanging space, some are really deep, some have tons of shelving space! I’ll give you tons of different options in this post so you can decide what’s best for you.
I will share the best ways to organize your closet, including some of my all-time favourite organization products!
This post is all about ways to organize your closet!
Clever Ways to Organize Your Closet
1. Space-Saving Hangers
Velvet hangers are amazing for so many reasons. First, they’re non-slip so you don’t have to deal with clothes sliding off the hanger! They’re also super thin, which can save tons of space in your closet. I also love that the hooks swivel around.
Although it’s definitely more of an aesthetic preference than organizational necessity, I think closets look so much better when you have all the same hangers. It allows all your clothing to be hung at the same height, and looks so much neater.
2. Hanging Closet Shelves
Some clothing items (like delicate sweaters) can get stretched out if put on hangers. If you’re running low on dresser space, the hanging closet shelf is a great way to add some extra storage in your closet!
Hanging closet shelves are also great for things like linens, hats, and more! The hanging shelf requires no installation – you just use velcro straps to attach to your closet rod!
3. Adjustable Closet Rod
Double your available hanging space with this closet hanging rod! This hanging rod is truly one of the best closet organization hacks.
If you have shorter items in your closet (like t-shirts or long sleeves), all the space below is wasted. Hang this rod to add an additional row to your closet. Both the width and height adjust, so it’s super flexible and adaptable to your closet size.
4. Canvas Storage Bins
If you have any shelf space in your closet, get organized with storage bins! Bins allow you to separate your stuff into categories, while also taming the clutter.
Since my bedroom has some of the largest closets in my home, I have storage baskets for many items like extra bathroom products, linens and towels, and other home items.
5. Shelf Dividers
If you don’t want to use storage baskets to separate your shelf space, shelf dividers are a great option too. The dividers will help you keep your categories separate (ex. towels and sweaters), while still allowing you easy access! The dividers linked above don’t require any installation at all, they’re adjustable and slide right onto your shelf.
6. Over-Door Shoe Organizer
Store your shoes efficiently with this over-door shoe organizer! It can hang over your closet door and display all your shoes so they’re easy to grab and go.
While I usually have 2-3 pairs of shoes I wear daily at the front door, storing some less frequently used shoes in your closet is a great way to save space elsewhere in your home.
7. Storage Bins
Clear storage bins are so helpful for organizing items you aren’t currently using. For example, you can store all your warm winter sweaters in storage bins during the summer so they don’t take up precious space on hangers! Or, Christmas decorations can be tucked away in a box when they’re not in use.
The bins linked above have handles so they’re easy to move around, and are also stackable to maximize space!
8. Dresser
While most people think of dressers as an item to be on display in your bedroom, dressers can also be great in a closet. Add a dresser to your closet to free up some floor space in your bedroom!
A dresser in the closet also utilizes space under shorter items that would otherwise be under-utilized. Use a dresser like the one above to store items that aren’t put on hangers like bras, underwear, and socks! This dresser is fabric, so it’s light and also not super expensive.
9. Drawer Dividers
Drawer dividers are a must-have in any dresser! Use dividers to easily separate smaller items like socks and underwear in drawers.
