Best Books To Read This Year: Top 6 Books I’ve Read So Far
These are all the best books to read this year!
Now that we’re almost halfway through 2024, it’s a great time to highlight some of the best books I’ve read so far. I only wanted to highlight my favourite books, so I scanned through all my book reviews and pulled out only those that were rated as 4/5 or higher.
The 6 books I’ve chosen include mystery/thriller, contemporary romance, and even historical fiction – so there’s book recommendations for all types of readers! These books have made my reading list for 2024 incredible, and I can’t wait to share them with you.
Let’s dive into the best books to read this year!
6 Best Books To Read This Year
1. The Women – 4.8/5
Author: Kristin Hannah
Genre: Historical Fiction
The Women is definitely my favourite book of the year so far! I absolutely loved the strong female lead. I could feel every ounce of her frustration, heartbreak, and triumph throughout the whole book. This book was somewhat long, but it didn’t feel that way reading it. The story never felt dragging. The book covers about 20 years of the main character’s journey, which made me feel so connected and invested in her life. Honestly, I don’t usually go for historical novels, but this one really changed the game for me. The historical context, overlapping with personal narratives, made this book a clear standout for me this year.
2. First Lie Wins – 4.4/5
Author: Ashley Elston
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
First Lie Wins felt unique right from the start. Often, thrillers can be slow to get going, with all the action packed in the second half, but this story was gripping from the early stages. It was fast-paced, with intriguing characters, and lots of suspense! I saw a few reviews that described this book as a “cat-and-mouse” thriller and that’s totally accurate. It added an extra layer of tension that kept me hooked. The author’s intricate plot twists and well-developed characters made this an exciting read.
3. None of This Is True – 4.3/5
Buy on Amazon
Author: Lisa Jewell
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
I did not see the direction of None of This Is True coming at all. I was intrigued from the start, and hooked throughout to see where all the twists and turns went. It’s a little dark, but definitely a great psychological thriller! The author, Lisa Jewell, did an excellent job of creating a sense of uncertainty and constant guessing about what’s true and what’s not. If you enjoy thrillers that keep you on your toes, consider this book a must-read!
4. For The Last Time – 4.3/5
Author: Heidi Perks
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
This book had a unique plotline that I enjoyed. There’s so many complex relationships in this book that I found kept me hooked – the relationship between therapist and patient, husband and wife, and more. This dynamic added a lot of depth and complexity that kept me invested in every page. This is one of those books that has you doubting & questioning who the villain is, and who’s telling the truth. The author flipped between past and present seamlessly, at the perfect times. I loved this book!
5. Yours Truly – 4.2/5
Author: Abby Jiminez
Genre: Contemporary Romance
I loved that this book started with the 2 main characters as enemies. You knew they would end up as lovers, but the journey to get there was unknown. The main characters were also very layered and multi-dimensional which I enjoyed, and I liked how the author flipped back and forth between their points of view.
Importantly, this book is part of a series, so make sure to read A Part of Your World first. I read the first book last year, and loved their author’s style. Her books are both heartfelt and entertaining, which is a great mix for contemporary romance!
6. The Bodyguard – 4.0/5
Author: Katherine Center
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Lastly, to round out my list of the best books to read this year – The Bodyguard was such a fun read! Romance books aren’t usually super unique, but I can honestly say the plot, characters, and storyline for this one was unlike any other book I’ve read. I read this book right around Valentine’s Day, and it was the perfect timing for this type of book. A slightly cheesy, but cute rom-com book was just what I needed!
