Easy Handmade Christmas Card Tutorial
1. Gather your supplies
To make this card, I used a few simple crafting tools. If this list sounds overwhelming, don’t worry – I included lots of alternatives throughout this post in case you want to avoid buying these items or don’t have them on hand either.
But, to show you exactly what I used, here’s my supplies list:
- Cards. I used this card set from Michael’s, but you can use any cards (and any colours) you’d like. You could also fold your own card using simple card stock. I wouldn’t recommend doing this on regular printer paper, since it will be too flimsy!
- Stamp. Michael’s is the best place for inexpensive stamps! I bought mine several years ago, but this stamp set includes stamps for a bunch of holidays!
- Ink. If you’re using stamps, you’ll also want an ink pad too. This ink pad has tons of different colours. I went with traditional black for my card, but you could choose a Christmas-themed colour instead!
- Circle. To make the decorative ornament, you’ll need a card stock circle. I happened to have circular gift tags that I used for this, but you can always cut your own out of card stock too!
- Washi Tape. Any pattern or colour of washi tape will work! This Christmas Washi Tape pack is a great option.
- General Crafting Supplies. Other helpful supplies include tape (or a glue gun), a sharpie/black marker, and scissors!
2. Stamp Card
Once you’ve gathered all your supplies, your next step is to stamp your card! Press your stamp into the ink pad, line it up with your card, and apply even pressure to transfer. This is something you probably learned in kindergarten- don’t over think it!
ALTERNATIVE: If you don’t have a stamp, you could hand-letter “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays” or any other phrase you want on your card with markers.
3. “Decorate” Ornament
In this next step, use your washi tape to “decorate” the ornament. You can choose any combination of patterns! I cut the washi tape into smaller strips, and folded the excess over the edges onto the back side. Repeat until it’s covered.
ALTERNATIVE: if you don’t have washi tape, you could draw your own designs on with marker!
4. Secure Ornament on Card
Next, you want to secure your ornament onto your card – tape or glue will work! This step is pretty explanatory.
5. Add Finishing Touches
Lastly, draw on an ornament string. If you don’t have a steady hand, I recommend doing this with a ruler or straight edge.
That’s all! You can always add your own touch to the card too – add a border, or smaller ornaments to fill the space more, etc. And most importantly, don’t forget to add a heartfelt message inside the card!
