Looking to figure out how to tackle spice storage in your kitchen?

Spice storage can look so cluttered and chaotic if it’s not done well. It can also look clean and crisp if you do it right! For some reason, there never seems to be an in-between. When I moved into my apartment, spice storage was one of the first things I tackled in my kitchen. It simplified my cooking and was so easy to do. In this blog post, I’ll share tips to help you tackle spice storage and keep it organized. No matter what the size of your kitchen is, I promise it can look good and be functional! I’ll link helpful products so your spice drawer can be perfect!

This post is all about spice storage and organization!

Spice Storage and Organization

1. Give away or get rid of spices you don’t use

In general, de-cluttering is a key step to do before you tackle organization. For example, when I went through each item in my spice drawer I realized I had accumulated many duplicates (ex. 2 packages of basil) and spices I never use (ex. Mustard seeds- not sure why I ever thought I would use these?!). So, you should go through everything you have and give away extra and unused spices to friends.

2. Pick your optimal storage area

Next, you’ll want to decide the most ideal area to store your spices. The kitchen is one of those areas where you should think strategically about where you’re placing items. If there’s one countertop that you’ll do all your cooking on, don’t put your spices on the opposite end of the kitchen! You should choose a spot that’s easily accessible and makes sense.

You may have limited drawer space, so countertop storage may work best for you. There’s so many different options out there. For example, spices could be stored:

  • In a drawer
  • In a cabinet
  • On the counter
  • On the wall (mounted)

Personally, I like having my spices tucked away in a drawer so they’re not cluttering the counter, but everyone’s kitchen will look different.

3. Buy matching containers

Next, you’ll want to pick out your spice containers. Although it may seem unnecessary to some, having all your spices in uniform containers is so much more aesthetically pleasing.  Pick containers that suit you style – there’s endless styles available including black, white, bamboo, etc. It’s really a personal preference what you want your jars to look like. Choose whatever goes well with the vibe of your kitchen, and what is functional (ex. make sure it holds enough).

4. Choose your organization products

Next, you can pick the organization product that makes sense for your space. The area you chose will determine what type of organization product you’ll use. For example, if you chose a drawer then you’ll be looking for drawer inserts! Don’t forget to take measurements before you buy anything so that your organization product will fit. I’ve linked a few different options here:

Drawer Organizers

Buy Bamboo Spice Drawer Organizer

Buy Steel Spice Drawer Organizer

Buy Clear Spice Drawer Organizer

I use drawer organizers for so many things, and spice storage is definitely one! I find the organizers help keep them all visible, and they don’t roll around in the drawer because they’re tightly packed.

Countertop Spice Storage

Buy Stainless Steel Rotating Cabinet

Buy Chrome Jar Organizer

If you’re limited on drawer or countertop space, try organizers that sit on your countertop. A revolving spice rack makes your spices super easy to access with just a quick spin! Or, try the stand organizer to display all your spices horizontally.

Mountable Spice Rack

Buy Wall-Mount Spice Rack Organizers

Buy Clear Spice Rack Organizer

An alternative to countertop storage is getting racks that mount to the wall! This saves your precious countertop space, and can be a really beautiful display if you have the space for it. Also, if you prefer to not have to open a drawer every time you want to cook, this is a great option for you!

Pull-Out Spice Rack

Buy Pull-Out Cabinet Organizer

Pull-out spice racks are great for deep or hard-to-access cabinets. Instead if digging through to the back, this spice storage option allowed you to easily grab your spices and get cooking!

5. Label Your Spices

Next, I highly recommend you label all your spices. Labels not only look nice and tidy, but obviously serve a practical purpose as well. Personally, I decided to just use my label maker that I had on hand to save money, but there’s also SO many gorgeous labels you can buy online that I think elevate your drawers.

5. Leave Some Extra Room

Make sure to leave space for a few additions! You may need to add one or two spices to your collection, so don’t jam your space FULL right away.

6. Organize in Alphabetical Order

Lastly, putting your spices in alphabetical order will make your life so much easier! When you are cooking, it will be so easy to grab the spices you need quickly since you’ll know exactly where everything is.

Those are all my tips to set up and organize your spice storage! It took me less than an hour to get all my spices organized, and it’s so satisfying to have it neat every time I open the drawer.
