Get your home organized with this ultimate list of things to declutter in your home!

We live in a world that encourages consumption, which inevitably leads to many of us having tons and tons of STUFF. While some stuff is useful, a lot of it never gets used and creates clutter.

Decluttering your home will make your space feel more organized and less chaotic. Although it can take a lot of work to declutter, the end result is definitely worth it!

Every home has many areas and categories that are prone to clutter. In this post, I share a list of things to declutter in your home, broken down by categories/rooms.

This list has a lot on it, so I highly recommend you tackle it one category or room at a time. As you check off sections on the list, you’ll get more motivation to keep going.

This post is all about things to declutter!

Things To Declutter

Kitchen

things you forget to declutter

1. Cookbooks. Do you have a ton of cookbooks, but always reach for the same 1 or 2? Or, do you mainly use online recipes yet you’re still hanging onto paper cookbooks? I have a few staple cookbooks that I use often. For others that I rarely use, I wrote down the 1-2 amazing recipes from the book, and donated it afterwards.

2. Tupperware. Tupperware collections can easily become filled with containers missing lids and mismatched items. These items don’t serve a functional purpose, so they shouldn’t take up space in your cabinets!

3. Water bottles & travel mugs. Similar to tupperware, water bottles and travel mugs can easily be incomplete or missing sets. Also, you can really only drink from one water bottle at a time per person in your household…so if you have 10 water bottles and only 2 people at home, it may be time to donate a few!

4. Pantry. I actually mentioned going through your pantry as a tip in my post on How to Save Money on Groceries – it helps prevent over buying things you already have at home, and also encourages you to use up what you have before it expires.

5. Fridge & freezer. Just like your pantry, food tends to get stuffed in the fridge and freezer after every grocery shop. How often do you actually go through what you have? Declutter your fridge and freezer to get rid of expired items, and use up items that are about to go bad.

6. Cookware. Cookware is a pretty big category, but it’s an important one! If you’re cooking every day, cluttered cookware drawers and cabinets will drive you nuts. When decluttering cookware, keep these questions in mind: How often do I use this? Do I have duplicates (ex. 2 pans almost identical in size)? Do I have space for this? Is the item good-quality (ex. does a pan have a peeling non-stick coating)?

Entry Way

7. Keys. When I moved, I realized I had a ton of random keys in my jar by the front door. When I decluttered my keys I was able to get rid of old bike lock keys, keys to an old mailbox that I no longer had, etc. Make sure all your keys are well-labeled, so you know each serves a purpose.

8. Wallet or purse. My wallet tends to overflow with receipts, gum wrappers, rewards cards, expired gift cards, and lots of other useless junk! Remove all the useless stuff to save yourself from carrying around junk every day.

9. Hats/mittens/scarves. Accessories that are stored at the front door like hats, mittens, and scarves should be decluttered at least every season. It’s safe to say that if you didn’t wear it during that season, it’s a good time to pass it on!

10. Junk drawer. I think junk drawers are a universal thing! Or maybe I’m just saying that to make myself feel better. If you have that one spot in your house that becomes your dumping spot for miscellaneous mail, receipts, gum/snacks, etc…I can almost guarantee it needs to be decluttered!

Office

11. Office supplies. How many dried out pens, and half-pads of sticky notes do we really need? Go through those office supplies drawers and get rid of anything that isn’t usable anymore.

12. Paper files. De-cluttering paper is SO satisfying. When I de-cluttered my papers, I noticed my biggest problems were bills and receipts. Now, I receive e-statements for all my bills. I also scan any receipts that I need a copy of (ex. for my business), then recycle them! Lots of stores also give the option to have your receipt emailed, I choose this whenever possible.

Bedroom

13. Clothes. De-cluttering your clothing wardrobe is a huge undertaking. I recommend tackling this by season. At the end of each season, before you pack those clothes away, it’s a great opportunity to declutter your wardrobe. De-cluttering seasonally will be less overwhelming, but will still help you keep on top of your wardrobe! Sell, donate, or re-gift items that:

  • You haven’t worn all season
  • Have rips, tears, or damage
  • Don’t fit anymore

14. Under your bed. When’s the last time you checked under your bed? It’s easy to forget about stuff under your bed since it’s tucked away out of sight.

15. Jewelry. Declutter your jewelry collection and get rid of anything that’s broken, rarely worn, or not your style anymore. I know I tend to reach for the same jewelry staples every day, so I was able to donate a bunch of unused jewelry and clear up some drawer space! If your jewelry collection could use an organization makeover, check out my post on Jewelry Organization Ideas.

16. Linen closet. When I moved, I decluttered my linen closet for the first time. I was shocked to see how many useless things I managed to accumulate over the years. I had mismatched pillowcase sets, and even sheet sets for bed sizes I don’t own anymore!

17. Shoes. I’m totally guilty of keeping shoes past their lifespan, or holding onto “special occasion” shoes that I never get around to wearing. These unused shoes take up valuable room in your closet!

Bathroom

18. Cleaning supplies. There’s an endless number of cleaning products on the market, and you’ve likely collected many in your home. Go through your cleaning supplies collection and try to use up any products that are almost gone in your next clean! Decluttering this category can also include things like mops, rags, scrubbers, and more.

19. Makeup/skincare products. A huge clutter culprit is makeup and skincare products. It’s so easy to end up with duplicates, expired products, etc. Decluttering these items will streamline your getting-ready process! To keep your makeup and skincare products under control, I highly suggests trying to use up one entire product before moving onto the next one. This will help you avoid having 10 different face moisturizers on the go at the same time!

20. Medicine cabinet. Similar to makeup/skincare products, your medicine cabinet can easily get overflowed with expired products and duplicates. Make sure to tackle other items like band-aids or first aid kits in your medicine cabinet too!

21. Games collection. Puzzles missing pieces, games that haven’t been played in years, and other unused items in your game collection are all items that you should consider passing on!

22. Book collection. If you have a huge collection of books that you’ll never read again, consider passing them along to a new home. I love sharing books I’ve read with friends or donating books to local schools.

23. Home decor. Home decor styles can change over time, and sometimes you’ll end up with items that no longer work in your home. Go through everything you have on display (frames, trinkets, pillows, blankets, etc) and also things you might have stored away (like partially used candles). Decide what you realistically want and have room for in your home, and get rid of the rest! I really think less is more when it comes to home decor.

24. CDs/DVDs. Although CD/DVDs are becoming less common, if you still have these laying around your home I recommend you declutter your collection.

25. Electronics and cords. We all have so many electronics in our lives whether it’s phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches, or charging cords for all these electronics! When’s the last time you went through your collection and got rid of items that you no longer use?

26. Sentimental items. Sentimental items are tricky to declutter, because we are often very attached to these items. Ultimately, if something still brings you value and joy, then you can keep it. But if it’s something you’ve kept just for the sake of holding onto, it re-evaluate whether it’s really worth it. Do you need to keep a birthday card from a friend you had in grade 3 that you’ll never talk to again? Probably not.

27. Seasonal decor. Seasonal decor is another great thing to declutter every season. After Christmas, if there’s any decor you didn’t use or didn’t like, don’t store it away and keep it for another year.

28. Car. If you spend a lot of time in you car on the go, your car is likely a place where food wrappers, coffee cups, and other stuff from your travels gets left behind. Declutter the junk in your car. Don’t forget about your trunk and glove compartment!

TIP: During the decluttering process, I think it’s really important to consider the environment. Throwing something into the garbage should be a last resort. Instead, you can try to:

  • Gift the item to a friend or family member
  • Donate to a local shelter, thrift store, etc.
  • Sell or give away the item
