Create a calm, tidy, and productive work environment with these home office organization tips!
Are you struggling with how to organize your home office? Home offices have so many perks including the 0-minute commute time, and the fact that you can personalize your setup much more than an office cubicle.
But, offices tend to be filled with supplies, cords, technology, paperwork, and more. It’s not so much fun to have a clutter-filled office in your home.
In this blog post, I’ll share some helpful office organization tips and tricks. I’ll also share some home office organization products to help get your space in order.
This post is all about home office organization tips!
Home Office Organization Tips
1. Designate a Space
First, you need to pick where your home office will be. I highly recommend you designate a space for your home office, rather than just floating between the kitchen table, living room couch, and bed.
This is an important step to getting organized, because if gives you a “home base” where everything goes instead of sprawling across the house. You don’t have to have an entire bedroom dedicated to your office, a quiet corner of the living room will work just as well.
2. Organize Your Office Supplies
Pens, pencils, sticky notes, tape, scissors… these are all useful things for home offices, but can cause a ton of clutter if they’re disorganized. Plus, you’ll waste time looking for things if you don’t know exactly where they are. So, I recommend you come up with a system to organize your office supplies. Depending on your space, drawer inserts or a desktop organizer may work for you!
Buy Interlocking Drawer Organizer Set
This drawer organizer set comes with 8 bins that interlock, which allows you to configure them in a way that perfectly fits your space.
Buy Desktop Supplies Organizer
If your office lacks drawer space, you can opt for a desktop supplies organizer. The key is that all your stuff has a “home base”.
3. Declutter, Then Organize Your Files
In my post on Simple Ways to Keep Your Home Clean and Organized, I mentioned how paper & files can be a huge source of clutter. So, I highly recommend you declutter your files before you organize them! Go through your paperwork and declutter as much as you can! If you need to keep records but don’t want to hold onto a paper copy, scanning is a great way to convert your important document to digital.
Once you have only essential paperwork you need to hang onto, set up an organization system! Hanging file organizers are great for offices with limited drawer space, or desktop organizers can be helpful if you have paperwork that you need to access regularly.
This hanging file organizer can be hung up on your wall, off the side of a filing cabinet, or even on the back of a door!
If you’d rather keep your files on your desk, this 4-tier file organizer is a great option for you. You could create a system where you file your highest priorities in top level, and lower levels correspond to lower urgency tasks.
4. Organize Your Electronics & Cables
Next, organizing your electronics and cables can make a big difference to creating a tidy work environment. Here’s a few different products you can use to help get your tech clutter under control:
Cable ties are super helpful to prevent your cables from getting tangled together. When I’m not using something (like a charger), I wrap it up with a cable tie and keep it in a basket so it doesn’t clutter my space. The set of 20 includes small, medium, and large sizes too.
If you’d rather keep your cables accessible rather than putting them away after every use, cable clips are great option. These cable holder clips can stick to the side of your desk, so you can keep them organized but still accessible!
Buy Power Strip With Outlet Cover
Does the sight of a bunch of jumbled cords on an outlet drive you nuts? This sleek power strip will be a game-changer! It helps you hide your cords and tuck them out of sight. Since it’s so thin, it’s also great if you have an outlet behind furniture that you want a power strip for. Make sure to get the right size for your type of outlet!
5. Buy Products With Built-In Storage
One of the best organization tips is to buy products with built-in storage whenever possible! I apply this rule in bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms… so home offices are no exception. For example, if you’re buying a monitor riser anyways, why not buy one with a drawer like the one below? It will give you a space to store adapters, USBs, pens and pencils, etc.
6. Utilize Wall Space
To help keep your desk clutter-free, utilize wall space by installing floating shelves, bookshelves, or other vertical storage solutions.
Floating shelves can be used to display office decor, but are also a great space to organize your books, notebooks, etc.
Another great option to get your home office organized is a ladder bookcase! In my home office, I use storage baskets on a few levels for storage, and then use the others for home decor so it is functional but still stylish! Ladder bookcases are a fantastic way to maximize the vertical space in your office.
7. End Every Day With a 5-Minute Office Tidy Up
When working from home, it’s easy to walk away from your office and jump into your next task (like cooking dinner) and leave your mess behind.
But, taking 5 minutes at the end of your work day to tidy up will help you maintain an organized home office. Tuck your notebook into a drawer, load your empty coffee cup into the dishwasher, and put away your pens. This small step allows you to start your next work day with a clear office space, and a clear mind!
